Big-squares mode: an iPhone for a 5-year-old or a grandparent
A home screen with only a few big squares, like Camera, Photos, Calls and WhatsApp. No settings, no App Store, and only a code gets you out. It is called Assistive Access, and it is already built into the iPhone.
For a kid who wants a camera, a parent who gets lost on the normal screen, or anyone who needs a simple phone. Works on iOS 17 and later.

- 1
Open Assistive Access
In Settings tap Accessibility, scroll to the bottom and tap Assistive Access. Then tap Set Up Assistive Access and Continue.
- 2
Check the Apple Account
The phone shows which Apple Account it is signed in to. Apple recommends the account of the person who will use the phone, and you can change it here. Not signed in? Skip this step.
- 3
Pick Grid
Grid gives you the big squares, with pictures and icons. Rows puts everything in a list. For a 5-year-old, Grid.
- 4
Add only what is needed
Tap the + next to each app. Camera, Photos, Calls and Messages are built for this mode, and you can add WhatsApp and most other apps too, in their usual design. For a little kid, Camera and Photos are enough. Each app asks what is allowed, like who can be called.
- 5
Check the unlock code
This is the code that unlocks the phone. Whoever uses the phone needs to know it, or you set up Face ID for them. To change it: Change Security Settings.
- 6
Set an exit code only you know
A separate code, only for leaving the mode and changing its settings. Right after it you can add a recovery Apple Account. Do it: forget the code without one and the whole phone has to be reset.
- 7
Start it
Tap Start Using Assistive Access and enter the exit code. The screen switches to the big squares. Next time: Settings, Accessibility, Assistive Access, Start Assistive Access.
Good to know
How to get out
Press the side button 3 times quickly (the Home button on older models), tap Exit Assistive Access and enter the exit code. The same triple-click also lets anyone make an emergency call, no code needed.
Brightness, volume and wallpaper
Inside the mode: press the side button 3 times, then Settings. That is where you cap brightness and volume and change the wallpaper.
Adding an app later
Apps are added and removed only outside the mode: exit, then Settings, Accessibility, Assistive Access.
Send it to someone who needs it
The button opens WhatsApp with the message ready; you pick who.
